# `eth_signTransaction`

Signs a transaction with the connected account's key and returns the signed transaction as a hex-encoded RLP payload. The returned payload can be broadcast later via `eth_sendRawTransaction`.

To sign and broadcast in a single step, use [`eth_sendTransaction`](/docs/rpc/eth_sendTransaction) or [`eth_sendTransactionSync`](/docs/rpc/eth_sendTransactionSync). To preview the filled-in transaction (gas, fees, balance diffs) without signing, use [`eth_fillTransaction`](/docs/rpc/eth_fillTransaction).
